E-Blast: Revitalizing our downtowns

PA Representative Gina Curry banner image

Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,

This week, my House colleagues and I passed important bills that would help our neighbors and improve communities:

We’re aiming to improve women’s health by:

  • Ensuring healthcare coverage for menopause care, both from private insurers (HB 1346) and Medicaid (HB 1345);
  • Requiring employers to provide reasonable workplace accommodations to help workers do their jobs when experiencing pregnancy or menopause (HB 2135); and
  • Directing the state to partner with healthcare providers to educate women about perimenopause and menopause and give them tools to prepare (HB 1411).

We’re looking to protect kids by increasing penalties for retailers who illegally sell vaping products to minors (HB 1434) and requiring the state?to test baby food manufactured in Pennsylvania for the presence of toxic heavy metals (HB 507).

We’re working on reducing utility bills by requiring electric utilities to procure grid-stabilizing battery storage, which would help reduce peak demand and lower system costs, while maintaining reliability and affordability (HB 2380).

We’re working quickly to ban the sale of synthetic kratom and regulating the sale of natural kratom products (HB 2657).

We’re helping families with legislation that would require child care providers to inform families, staff and the state at least 30 days before permanently closing (HB 2492).

Read on for more about what we were up to this week!

Update to our office hours: October 12th and October 14th

Kicking off Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the Capitol

We’re officially into Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and that means the annual Turn the Fountain Pink news conference at the Capitol! Each year, the Department of General Services turns the water of the Capitol’s main fountain pink to raise awareness and honor those living with, and those we’ve lost, from the disease.

The news conference is hosted each year by the PA Breast Cancer Coalition and features legislative speakers and advocates.

Last year we accomplished a huge goal in getting Senate Bill 88 signed into law, so that insurance plans in Pennsylvania now must cover all medically necessary diagnostic imaging. The PA Breast Cancer Coalition was so kind to honor me this year as one of their Pink Ribbon Awardees for my work on HB 433, the companion bill to SB 88, and my legislative focus on women’s health and wellness.

Even with our recent wins, we still have more to do, and Turn the Fountain Pink really highlights that.

Please take a moment to watch the videos below to hear more about my breast cancer advocacy!

Main Street Matters: in Lansdowne!

Yesterday, the PA Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Rick Siger awarded downtown Lansdowne a new Main Street designation through the Main Street Matters program! Main Street Matters provides downtown business districts, like Lansdowne’s, the support and tools they need to spark economic growth and create stronger communities.

The Secretary joined us to visit Camellia Coffee House, the Lansdowne Theater, and Utility Works. Lansdowne’s Economic Development Corporation plans to focus its five-year strategy on transforming downtown Lansdowne into an arts and culture destination.

I am so proud to be part of this huge investment in Lansdowne’s business corridor, and I’m excited to see how this support helps us embrace local art, business, culture, and creativity even more than we already do!

Fire Prevention Week

October 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week, and last night, the Upper Darby Fire Department held their annual Fire Prevention Week Expo. The event featured fire safety demonstrations and education, family activities, and a chance to meet our firefighters and see their trucks and equipment up close.

Fire safety starts with you! Make sure your home has a smoke alarm, keep a fire extinguisher handy, and always know the escape routes you’d use in case of fire!
