E-Blast: Happy birthday, Black Maternal Health Caucus!

PA Representative Gina Curry banner image

Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,

Tomorrow marks the third anniversary of the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus! When my co-chairs and I founded it, we knew we were onto something great. But how quickly we became a central part of the House Democrats’ initiatives, and how much we’ve accomplished in three years, still blows me away.

Over the years we’ve collectively gotten maternal health bills signed into law, four of them part of our MOMNIBUS legislative package. These bills will continue to provide access to life-saving solutions in Black maternal health.

On top of that, we’ve worked hard to raise awareness of the significant racial disparities in adequate pregnancy and postpartum care and maternal mortality rates across Pennsylvania, too.

We have many more bills introduced that I’m excited to see move through the legislative process, and so much more work to do before pregnancy and birth is equitable for all mothers. I’m proud to work alongside my co-chairs and all of the members of the PABMHC to make significant change for mommas statewide.

Happy Birthday to the PABMHC!

Celebrate with us!

What an honor!

This week, I had the honor of accepting a Pink Ribbon Award from the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition recognizing my work championing breast cancer legislation. This year we passed Senate Bill 88, a companion to my House Bill 433, into law – requiring health insurance plans in PA to cover the full cost of all diagnostic breast imaging, not just that first mammogram.

Too many women hear they have a suspicious spot on an annual, insurance-covered mammogram only to struggle to afford the additional imaging requested by their doctors. Some even choose not to get that secondary imaging because of the cost. This new law removes that barrier, ensuring if you need further imaging, you can get it without worrying about your medical bill.

Saying hello to our neighbors at SPARC

This July, The SPARC at Barclay Square opened just a small distance away from our district office! It’s the new home of the Upper Darby Arts & Education Foundation, and a space for creating art, music, dance and theater productions, and more! SPARC offers a huge number of youth and community creativity programs – and it houses the administrative offices for our beloved Summer Stage and Schoener MusicMan Academy.

My staff and I were so in love with this new space when we toured it this week! Check them out at Upper Darby Arts & Education Foundation.

We loved having you at our Senior Breakfast!

We had such a fun morning hanging out with our senior residents at our Champion Your Health senior breakfast at Watkins Senior Center. Everyone was so eager to play games, check out the activities we had planned, meet our vendors and get to know me and my team!

I also had the chance to tour the Delco Health Department’s medical bus and meet Aminata and Alyssa, two of the practitioners who staff the bus to bring healthcare directly to our community.

Period Action Day with PA First Lady Lori Shapiro

Period products are basic necessities, yet women and girls across the country struggle to get the products they need. Period Action Day is a recognition of this need and a day to advocate for and help provide period products to everyone who needs them.

I spent Saturday afternoon in Norristown with PA First Lady Lori Shapiro, Montgomery County Commissioner Jamila Winder, and many other local and state leaders packing and distributing period products for the Norristown community. No one should feel limited by their period because they don’t have pads and tampons available to them – and we’ll keep advocating for better access.

A Tribute to Survivors & Victims

I spent yesterday morning at the Delaware County Courthouse in Media for the Domestic Abuse Project’s Tribute to Survivors & Victims. It was a chance to hear from DAP’s board president, the chair of the DV Taskforce, and others on the domestic violence landscape and what we can do to help. The event honored the courage of survivors and remembered the victims of domestic violence in our communities. I was proud to stand with our local leaders and with my colleagues from the House for this important event.
