Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,
|
|
This week in Harrisburg we celebrated the third anniversary of the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus! Many of my House colleagues joined us for a news conference in the afternoon and a birthday reception in the evening. Our biggest victory in the past three years has been the support and passing of seven legislative bills to save moms’ lives.
Co-chairing the PBMHC is an honor and responsibility I hold dear as a state representative. I will continue to work diligently to make the pregnancy and birth journey safer, more accessible, and better for not only Pennsylvania’s Black moms, but all moms across the Commonwealth.
Below you’ll find some photos and video from our PBMHC events.

Legislative update: two important awareness campaigns adopted
|
On Wednesday, I had two House Resolutions adopted by the Chamber: H.R. 617 and H.R. 650!
The first, H.R. 617, designates October as “National Pedestrian Safety Month” in Pennsylvania. Our roads are rapidly becoming more congested with vehicles and more dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. At the same time, we know that walkability improves a community’s sense of identity, supports local businesses, and improves our health and well-being. My hope is for this resolution to bring awareness of pedestrian safety and the importance of walkability statewide!
The second, H.R. 650, designates November 16-20 “Pennsylvania Education for Students Experiencing Homelessness Awareness Week” and November 20 “Red Shirt Day” in Pennsylvania. More than 52,000 Pennsylvania students are trying to complete their primary education while coping with unstable or no housing. This resolution asks all of us to be aware of the needs of unhoused children in our communities, and to wear red on November 20 to show our solidarity with them.

Earlier detection of inflammatory breast cancer
|
Inflammatory breast cancer is an aggressive form of breast cancer that is often misdiagnosed as more common issues like mastitis. The delay in diagnosis means that many women don’t find out they have IBC until it has advanced.
This week, my fellow Delaware County state representative Jennifer O’Mara introduced her legislation, House Bill 2850, which would require healthcare providers to be educated on the deadly cancer so that more women are diagnosed at earlier stages.
The legislation is being championed not only by legislators but by the family of Emmy-nominated actor Marnie Schulenburg, who died of IBC in 2022. The bill is called “Marnie’s Law” in her honor.

Better cancer screening for our dedicated firefighters
|
Firefighters are exposed to known cancer-causing chemicals when they use firefighting foams and protective fire gear. We know that they have a higher risk of cancer than the general population.
Still, these brave community members choose to serve in case of fire emergency. And we need to ensure they can get the important cancer screenings they need to mitigate the risks they face.
On Monday, I stood with my colleagues in support of House Bill 2826, which would create a cancer screening program to ensure professional and volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania have access to free annual cancer screenings.

A fond farewell to our friend, Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski
|
After 20 years serving as state representative for Wilkes-Barre, the townships of Bear Creek and Buck, and the boroughs of Bear Creek Village and Laurel Run, my good friend and colleague Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski is retiring!
Rep. Pashinski has been an exceptional leader, a mentor for so many new representatives, and a joy to serve alongside. We will miss having him with us in the House! Best wishes with your next endeavors and enjoy your much-deserved retirement!

New Teen Resource Closet in Lansdowne!
|
Last weekend a new Teen Resource Closet celebrated its grand opening at First Presbyterian Church in Lansdowne (140 N. Lansdowne Avenue). Local Girl Scout Eli started the closet as a service project as she works toward her Girl Scout Gold Award.
Eli’s goal is to support teens in the Penn Wood and Upper Darby school districts with a means of getting free hygiene products and clothing. She’s done an amazing job bringing this together!
If you want to help support Eli and the Teen Resource Center, donations are accepted year-round. They accept deodorant, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, menstrual products, band-aids, and clothing in adult sizes S-3XL.
If you have questions don’t hesitate to reach out by emailing teenresourcecloset@gmail.com!

One Philly Breast Cancer Awareness Walk
|
Philly Mayor Cherelle Parker, the Mayor’s Office of Women’s Engagement, and Robin Maddox, founder of She Shines Women Conference and a breast cancer advocate hosted their One Philly Pass the Baton Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Saturday!
We walked from the School District of Philadelphia down North Broad to Love Park, where the Penn Medicine Mobile Mammogram bus welcomed us!
This was an inspiring event that encouraged many women to get their mammograms and know the signs of early breast cancer. I’m grateful to Mayor Parker and the event organizers for bringing us all together!
