Haddock secures $3.76 million in grants for community improvements

HARRISBURG, May 20 – State Rep. Jim Haddock is pleased to announce more than $3.76 million in state grants were awarded today for community improvement projects throughout his district in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties.
“These grants will allow numerous municipalities and organizations to upgrade facilities, install safety equipment, purchase needed police and public works vehicles and even more. This is yet another example of the tens of millions of dollars that I have worked to secure for our area during my tenure in Harrisburg,” said Haddock, D-Luzerne/Lackawanna.
“I was proud to collaborate with state Sen. Marty Flynn and my leadership team to ensure that the Commonwealth Financing Authority board knew how important these projects are to each of the entities that applied and I thank them for their support.”
The approved grants include the following:
Luzerne County
Avoca Borough: $230,000 to replace fencing at the Avoca/Dupont Teener League field also known as Flatts Field, and at the Avoca Little League Field.
Dupont Borough, on behalf of VFW Post 4909: $112,610 to replace the roof and multipurpose room flooring.
Dupont Borough: $125,444 to purchase new vehicles for the Dupont Police Department.
Duryea Borough, on behalf of Excelsior Hose Co. #2: $416,686 for a fire station addition project.
Duryea Borough: $146,281 for upgrades to the borough levee pump system facility on Marcy Street.
Hughestown Borough, on behalf of the Hughestown Hose Co.: $196,215 to purchase an ambulance.
Jenkins Township, on behalf of The Lithuanian Citizens Club: $157,487 for renovations to their building.
Jenkins Township: $70,000 to purchase a new police vehicle.
Laflin Borough: $145,580 to purchase a township wide security system installing five cameras at strategic locations across the borough; and $120,000 to purchase a dump truck.
Luzerne County Redevelopment Authority: $19,267 to rehabilitate railroad infrastructure along the Luzerne and Susquehanna Line in Wilkes-Barre City, Plains Township, and Duryea Borough.
Pittston City: $300,000 for market and promenade park improvements; and $400,000 to make renovations to 71 S. Main St. to maximize its commercial and economic potential.
Pittston Township, on behalf of Browntown Italian Citizens Enjoyment Club: $202,035 for building upgrades.
Pittston Township, on behalf of the Pittston Fire Department: $19,750 for an emergency generator upgrade.
Pittston Township: $14,978 to purchase crime scene equipment; and $200,000 to purchase street maintenance vehicles.
West Pittston Borough, on behalf of West Pittston Borough Hose Co. #1: $219,319 to purchase new air packs.
Lackawanna County
Dalton Borough: $11,364 to purchase safety lights and a snowplow for their heavy-duty pickup truck.
Glenburn Township: $40,000 to purchase a truck with snowplow equipment.
Lackawanna County, on behalf of the Old Forge Fire Department/The Eagle-McClure Hose Co.: $50,000 to renovate the fire station restrooms located in Old Forge Borough.
Lackawanna County, on behalf of St. Joseph's Center in Scranton: $215,987 to repair the Main Center masonry, roof and gutters.
Moosic Borough: $100,000 to purchase a refuse truck for the sanitation department; and $100,000 for upgrades to the Moosic Youth Center.
Newton Township: $40,000 to purchase a public works vehicle.
Taylor Borough: $100,000 to purchase new police radio equipment; and $6,175 to purchase and install security cameras in Derenick and Noakes Parks.
The Local Share Account funding, which is derived from tax dollars generated at Pennsylvania’s casinos, was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority, a state agency that coordinates various statewide economic development programs.
