Dear Neighbor,
Late Sunday evening, Attorney General Dave Sunday and The Foundation for Delaware County announced that an agreement had been reached “that will keep Crozer Health open for the immediate future while permanent restructuring of the system is solidified.” The announcement came after a six hour in-person meeting on Sunday in Harrisburg that was ordered by the bankruptcy judge in Texas. This morning, in a court hearing in Texas before that same judge, we learned that the agreement essentially buys us two more weeks before Prospect could be back in court with a closure motion (in a hearing currently scheduled for March 26, with a status update hearing scheduled for March 19). In the meantime, the Foundation for Delaware County agreed to the Attorney General’s request for short-term funding.
At this point, the situation at Crozer-Chester is still very precarious. Over the last month, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Delaware County Council and now the Foundation of Delaware County have all made investments to attempt to stop a closure. In order for a “permanent restructuring of the system to be solidified,” we need the other health care systems in the region to step up as well. We keep hearing about plans for a nonprofit healthcare consortium that could take over hospital operations or current service lines, but those plans are still very fluid. We also need Prospect to negotiate in good faith and share the information that the other hospital systems need to do their due diligence. I will continue to keep you updated as I learn more.
In the meantime, I will be joining Crozer Health employees at a Community Press Conference in front of Crozer-Chester Medical Center at 4 p.m. today.

Healthcare Accessibility and Hospital Closure Impacts Policy Hearing at Neumann University
Yesterday I participated in a very timely hearing at Neumann University hosted by the Senate Democratic Policy Committee. We heard from three expert panels regarding the dangers of private equity in health care and the potential impacts of a closure at Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital.
I had the opportunity to ask questions of doctors and nurses on the frontline at Crozer. I’m grateful to my colleagues Senator Kearney and Senator Kane for requesting this hearing and to Chairman Miller for including House members.
You can read the testimony and watch the full hearing at Senate Democratic Caucus Policy Chair Nick Miller Hosts Hearing Examining Healthcare Accessibility and Hospital Closure Impacts.

Moving the Economy Forward in SE PA
|
I was in Philadelphia last week for a public policy hearing on ways to keep Pennsylvania’s economy moving forward through investments in education and our transportation infrastructure, particularly in the state’s southeast region. The five-county southeast region generates 41% of the state’s economic activity despite encompassing just 5% of Pennsylvania’s land, and it creates 38% of Pennsylvania’s total tax revenue. The hearing agenda and testimony we received can be found here.

Help Update PA’s Transportation Plan
|
Every two years, PennDOT and the State Transportation Commission update Pennsylvania’s 12-Year Program to fix roads and bridges and update our infrastructure. As part of this process, they use a Transportation Survey and Online Public Forum to collect public input. They will document, review and use the public feedback provided to help identify needs and prioritize transportation projects in the 12-year plan.
Take the survey here: PENNSYLVANIA’S TRANSPORTATION SURVEY.
