$1.4 million awarded to Ridley Township for needed pedestrian safety improvements

One of my jobs as state representative is making sure our community receives state resources for positive change. Last week I was able to do just that when my colleagues and I presented a check for a $1.4 million state grant to Ridley Township to make critical pedestrian safety upgrades along MacDade Boulevard.

This busy roadway has seen too many accidents, including the tragic loss of 17-year-old Damien Hocker nearly two years ago. His death—and the losses felt by others—underscore the urgent need for safety improvements.

This million-dollar investment is due in no small part to the advocacy of Damien’s family. In the face of unimaginable grief, they turned their pain into purpose, working to prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedy. After Ridley Township rejected PennDOT’s initial plan for traffic-calming measures along MacDade Blvd., Damien’s family continued to advocate for change and PennDOT engineers presented a Plan B that Ridley Township agreed to and those are the changes that will be funded by this grant.

The funding will bring critical improvements between School Lane and Morris Avenue, including a pedestrian crossing with flashing lights, better signals, and increased visibility. These upgrades are about more than infrastructure—they’re about saving lives and building a safer community for everyone.

Bills approved to support Pennsylvanians

Last week was a busy and productive time back in session in Harrisburg. The Speaker entrusted me with the gavel on Tuesday and I had the honor of presiding over the House Chamber as Speaker Pro Tempore as we passed historic legislation. My colleagues and I worked to advance bipartisan bills focused on lowering energy costs, supporting working families, and protecting marriage equality across Pennsylvania.

Here are some key bills we passed:

HB 1834 – This bill sets requirements for large data centers operating in our Commonwealth to ensure that the energy costs associated with their operations are not passed on to residential customers or small businesses. As energy demand continues to grow, it’s critical that everyday Pennsylvanians are protected from bearing these costs.

HB 200 – This legislation establishes a new Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program through the Department of Labor & Industry. The program would provide partial wage replacement for workers who need time off due to a serious health condition, to care for a loved one, or to welcome a new child through birth or adoption. It would be funded through small, shared payroll contributions from both employers and employees, and include clear eligibility, benefit, and job protection standards.

HB 1800 – This bill updates Pennsylvania law to protect marriage equality by redefining marriage as a civil contract between two people, ensuring that our laws reflect fairness, dignity, and equal protection for all.

HB 2189 – For the third year in a row, the House passed a bill to increase the minimum wage.

House Bill 2189 is a comprehensive bill that would increase the statewide minimum wage from $7.25 per hour (where it has been stuck since 2009) to $11 per hour, effective Jan. 1, 2027. The minimum wage would then increase to $13 per hour in 2028 and $15 per hour in 2029, followed by annual cost-of-living adjustments.

These are important steps toward building a more affordable, equitable, and inclusive Pennsylvania and I’ll continue working to move these efforts forward in the Senate.

Celebrating Women in Harrisburg

Last week, I was able to celebrate a House milestone with my colleagues. There is currently a historic high of 65 female members in the House of Representatives (out of 203 members)!

In 1922, the first eight women were elected to the House, and now, 104 years later, we’re at the highest number to date with the first female Speaker of the House -- what an incredible achievement!

My office will be closed on Friday, April 3 in observance of Good Friday.

In the District

Welcome, Alexus!

I’m excited to introduce the newest member of our district office team, Alexus, who joined us in October as a Constituent Services Advisor.

Alexus is originally from Harrisburg but fell in love with this area while attending Temple University. One of her favorite parts of the job is getting out into the community through mobile office hours and connecting directly with constituents. She’s passionate about helping people and making sure everyone gets the support they need.

A fun fact about Alexus – she speaks three languages!

We’re happy to have her on our team and look forward to the great work she will continue to do for our community.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for DCCC Southeast Center

Last Friday, I was pleased to join my colleagues in the House and Senate, local elected officials, and leadership from Delaware County Community College, including President Dr. Marta Yera Cronin, to celebrate the opening of the College’s new Southeast Center, located at the former Archbishop Prendergast High School in Drexel Hill.

The Southeast Center will provide access to state-of-the-art classrooms, modern labs, and community-focused programming to meet the needs of today’s workforce. This center will help prepare students for in demand careers.

I’m proud to support initiatives like this that expand access to education and create pathways to good-paying jobs right here in Delaware County.

Traffic Control Improvements on I-476

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that traffic control improvements will occur at night on I-476 under a $63.7 million project to resurface, repair and improve nearly 17 miles of the interstate, the associated on-and-off ramps, and bridges from I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, to I-95 in Ridley Township, Delaware County.

The scheduled dates are Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10, from 9 PM – 5 AM.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Beware of Phishing Texts

Lately, we’ve heard from more constituents reaching out about suspicious text messages claiming to be from PennDOT.

These messages often threaten the suspension of your driver’s license or vehicle registration for unpaid fines and include a link demanding immediate payment.

These texts are scams and are not from PennDOT.

PennDOT does not send text messages about traffic violations or fines. Official communication is sent by mail through the United States Postal Service.

If you receive one of these messages:

  • Do not click any links.
  • Do not provide personal or payment information.
  • Delete the message immediately.
