Summer and your PECO bill

Dear Neighbor,

June is shaping up to be a busy month in Harrisburg as the PA House works with the state Senate to agree to a 2026–27 state budget the House already passed in April. I’ll be at the Capitol each week advocating for our budget, which invests in the public services and programs our communities rely on every day. As budget negotiations continue, I’ll keep you updated on the latest developments and the work we’re doing on behalf of communities across Pennsylvania.

I also want to thank everyone who donated to our children’s book drive in partnership with Delco Books for a Brighter Start. Your generosity will help put books into the hands of young readers in our community and encourage a lifelong love of reading. I am grateful to everyone who contributed and helped make this effort a success!

As summer begins and temperatures rise, PECO is reminding customers that energy bills may increase due to higher air conditioning use and greater demand for electricity. Beginning June 1, customers receiving electric or natural gas supply through PECO will see an increase in the supply portion of their bills.

According to PECO, the increase is being driven by higher energy and capacity prices across the PJM regional power grid, not by an increase in PECO’s delivery rates.

PECO has shared that it has been preparing the energy grid for the summer season by maintaining critical infrastructure, testing systems and procedures, and strengthening the local grid to better withstand severe summer storms and increased energy demand.

PECO encourages customers to review their energy usage, explore energy-saving programs, and make sure they understand the different components of their utility bill. Additional information and customer resources are available on PECO’s website.

Supporting Pennsylvania Students and Educators

This week, I joined my colleagues in supporting bills aimed at strengthening education and creating better learning environments for students across Pennsylvania.

H.B 1814 – Would prohibit the use of cell phones during the school day in K-12 schools across the Commonwealth, including public, private, charter, and intermediate unit schools. The bill is designed to reduce classroom distraction, support student learning, and help students stay focused throughout the school day. It passed the House with bipartisan support and now heads to the Senate for consideration.

H.B 2436 – Would help address Pennsylvania’s ongoing teacher shortage by directing teacher certification fee revenue to the Commonwealth’s Talent Recruitment Account. This funding would support educator recruitment and retention efforts, helping schools attract and keep qualified teachers in classrooms across Pennsylvania. By creating a dedicated funding stream for these efforts, the bill aims to strengthen the educator workforce and better support students throughout the state.

Audubon Advocacy Day in Harrisburg

On Monday, I had the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Audubon Mid-Atlantic during Audubon Advocacy Day in Harrisburg. We had a great conversation about the importance of conservation, environmental education, and land preservation in protecting Pennsylvania’s natural resources for future generations.

During our meeting, we discussed H.B. 2316, legislation that would designate the Scarlet Tanager as Pennsylvania’s official state migratory bird. The Scarlet Tanager is a beautiful bird found throughout Pennsylvania’s forests and serves as an important symbol of our Commonwealth’s natural heritage. I appreciated hearing from Audubon advocates about their work to promote conservation, protect wildlife habitats, and encourage outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship across the state.

Supporting maternal and infant health

Yesterday, along with my colleague Rep. Jennifer O’Mara, I met with local lactation consultants to discuss the important role they play in supporting mothers and infants. We had a thoughtful conversation about access to lactation services, maternal and infant health outcomes, and ways to ensure families receive the support they need during the postpartum period.

Hearing firsthand about their work and the needs of Pennsylvania families helps me better understand how I can support healthier outcomes for parents and children.

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives Legislative Fellowship Program is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2026 semester.

Based in Pennsylvania’s magnificent Capitol Building in Harrisburg, the Fellowship Program offers students the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the legislative process. In addition, fellows have opportunities to draft and present their own legislation, attend meet-and-greets with public officials and staff, and tour some of the Commonwealth’s historic public spaces, among many other enriching experiences.

Qualified applicants will be:

  • College undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or law school students;
  • Enrolled in a Pennsylvania college/university, or a Pennsylvania resident enrolled in an out-of-state institution; and
  • Pursuing any major with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Distracted driving can draw fines in PA

Drivers take note: Beginning June 6, you can be cited for driving while using a hand-held device in Pennsylvania, even while stopped at a red light or traffic jam. “Paul Miller’s Law” went into effect last year, but in the first-year police could only issue warnings. June 6 marks the date when drivers convicted of distracted driving will be subject to a fine. There are exceptions for contacting emergency officials and hands-free technology.

Signed by Gov. Shapiro in 2024, “Paul Miller’s Law” was named for a 21-year-old man from Scranton who was killed in a 2010 crash involving a truck driver who was using a cell phone.

FAFSA is open for the 2025-26 academic year

If you or someone in your family plans to attend college, career school, or summer classes, don’t forget to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before the June 30 deadline.

Colleges and career schools use the FAFSA to determine how much financial aid you may be eligible to receive, including grants, scholarships, work-study funds, and loans.

You must apply for aid every year. If you are going to start summer school or your financial situation has changed, federal student aid may be available.
