Don't let the PA Senate block contraceptive access

Dear Neighbor,

I hope you are doing well. As the House heads into another busy week in Harrisburg, I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who generously donated to our children’s book drive. Last Friday, my office delivered more than 2,000 books to Main Street Elementary School in Upland, where students were able to choose free books to take home and enjoy over the summer. It was truly heartwarming to see the excitement and joy on the students’ faces as they explored the books and picked their favorites.

I also want to remind you about my upcoming Medicare Webinar on supplemental plans, to be held on Tuesday, June 16, from 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Whether you’re approaching Medicare eligibility, helping a loved one navigate the process, or simply looking for more information, this webinar is a great opportunity to learn about your options and get answers to your questions. Give my office a call to register and receive the Zoom link.

As always, my office is here to help with state-related services and connect you with resources available in our community. Read on for updates from Harrisburg, upcoming events, and information that may be helpful to you and your family.

Americans for Contraception Press Conference

Sixty-one years ago this week, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in Griswold v. Connecticut that established a constitutional right to privacy in reproductive health decisions and upheld the right to contraception. In the wake of a different Supreme Court's decision to roll back abortion rights in the Dobbs decision four years ago, we have seen increased efforts to roll back other critical facets of reproductive healthcare, including birth control. This morning I joined my colleagues for a press conference to highlight some of the bills we have introduced in the PA House to protect and expand reproductive rights.

I spoke on House Bill 1140, the Contraceptive Access for All Act. Since 2017, when there were efforts to roll back access to birth control during the first Trump Administration, I have been working diligently on HB 1140. Since this bill passed the House floor with a bipartisan vote on June 3 of last year, this bill has sat over in the Senate. We are calling on the State Senate to take action and pass House Bill 1140. You can help by contacting your state Senators here.

At the Capitol

My House colleagues and I have been working hard in Harrisburg over the past several weeks to pass important legislation that would help our neighbors, strengthen our communities, and improve quality of life across Pennsylvania.

Here are a few of the measures that recently passed the House:

HB 2109 – Known as the “Golden Girls Law,” this bipartisan bill passed the House yesterday and would help expand affordable housing options by allowing people, whether related or unrelated, to live together under one roof. The legislation maintains local authority to enforce health and safety standards while providing flexible housing options for Pennsylvanians.

HB 2446 – Would create the Fire Company Transformational Grant Program to provide up to $30M in new grants for volunteer, municipal, and combination fire companies. The grant could be used for equipment, apparatus, facility improvements, recruitment, and other critical needs, helping department address rising costs, declining volunteer numbers, and increasing emergency call volumes while continuing to keep our communities safe.

HB 2314 – I voted to direct the Attorney General to conduct a public education campaign on artificial intelligence to educate the general public on various topics, including identifying AI-generated content, avoiding AI-enabled scams, understanding responsible behavior when engaging with AI chatbots, protecting personal data when using AI, awareness of bias and misinformation ingrained in AI programs and protecting children from AI misuse.

HB 2145 - This bill would prohibit the intentional use of PFAS, often called "forever chemicals," in products such as cosmetics, dental floss, juvenile products, and menstrual products. PFAS have been linked to serious health and environmental concerns, and this legislation aims to reduce Pennsylvanians' exposure to these chemicals. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.

HB 2300 – This legislation is designed to help small businesses stay current with sales tax obligations. The bill would expand access to software that automates sales tax collection and remittance, making compliance easier, more predictable, and more sustainable for businesses. The bill reduces administrative burdens and helps businesses avoid falling behind on tax payments.

Celebrating Wendy Haigood’s Retirement

Today, I had the pleasure of celebrating the retirement of my Harrisburg Legislative Assistant, Wendy Haigood. After more than 26 years of dedicated service at the Capitol, Wendy is beginning a well-deserved new chapter. If you have been to visit me at the Capitol over the past few years, Wendy Haigood likely warmly greeted you at the door and helped make you feel like a welcome guest. I am grateful for all she has done over the years and wish her nothing but happiness and success in her next adventure.

Congratulations, Wendy, and thank you for your many years of service!

Advocating for Small Business Development

Last week in Harrisburg, I joined advocates from the Pennsylvania Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Network to discuss the importance of investing in small businesses and strengthening local economies. CDFIs provide affordable loans and financial support to entrepreneurs and small businesses that may not have access to traditional financing, helping them grow, create jobs, and invest in their communities.

The PA CDFI Network represents 16 community development financial institutions across the Commonwealth. I appreciated the opportunity to learn more about their work and discuss ways we can continue supporting small businesses and economic development in Pennsylvania.

Celebrating Eagle Scout Mitchell DiAngelus

Last Thursday, I was honored to recognize Mitchell DiAngelus of Troop 277 in Wallingford on earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Since its founding in 1944, Troop 277 has produced 152 Eagle Scouts, with Mitchell proudly becoming the latest.

For his Eagle Scout project, Mitchell installed benches at the Ridley Creek Colonial Pennsylvania Farmstead, providing visitors with a place to rest and enjoy this historic area. His project will benefit the community for years to come.

Congratulations, Mitchell on this well-deserved honor!

Putting books into the hands of young readers

Last Friday, my office delivered more than 2,000 books to Main Street Elementary School as part of our partnership with Delco Books for a Brighter Start. Students were invited to browse the collection and choose books to keep and take home and enjoy over the summer.

It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces and hear the excitement as students searched for their next favorite book. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped make this effort a success. We were pleased to partner with Delco Books for a Brighter Start on our very first book fair. Together we are helping foster a love of reading and ensuring more children have access to books at home.
