Let's Take Charge of Our Destiny

(Aug 05, 2021)

Despite overwhelming evidence that it is safe and effective, many people continue to have concerns and doubts about the safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine. We all know that shaming or arguing with unvaccinated people does not work. So, we must provide the facts, which are that positive cases continue to rise in Monroe County and in Pennsylvania. It is a conversation worth having, especially if it is a loved one or someone you are in contact with daily. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, in Monroe County, just 47.2%, 80,599 people, are fully vaccinated. This should be a wake-up call that Monroe County is moving in the wrong direction for everyone. We cannot continue to put citizens, front-line medical workers, service workers and teachers in danger because of the raging Delta variant and our reluctance to protect ourselves and those around us. I have spoken with nurses, doctors and other front-line medical workers and they are frightened by the increasing hospitalizations. They are exhausted and simply cannot face another dire, winter of COVID-19 hospitalizations. According to the Pennsylvania COVID ALERTPA app, which charts daily numbers, as of Aug. 4, Monroe County has 15,203 cases and 322 deaths. The CDC reports the Delta variant is more contagious and spreads at a faster rate. Now the health experts are calling the Delta variant the virus of the unvaccinated. Unvaccinated people are suffering with more severe symptoms compared to Read more

LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus condemns bill that discriminates against athletes

(Aug 04, 2021)

HARRISBURG, Aug. 4 – A bill that would discriminate against LGBTQ+ students by restricting their ability to participate in their school’s sports programs as the gender they identify with was condemned by the LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus after a House Education Committee hearing on the proposed Republican legislation, according to the caucus’ co-chair, state Rep. Brian Sims, D-Phila. House Bill 972 would prohibit trans girls and women from playing scholastic and collegiate sports. “Republicans are again advocating for open discrimination against LGBTQ+ youth masked as a bill to protect girls and women,” Sims said. “As a former collegiate athlete, I know that LGBTQ+ kids, like all kids, see countless positive outcomes from engagement in sports. The opportunity to build skills, foster friendships and learn to work as a team are essential in development, especially for Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable population, trans kids. The trans community is at higher risk of being victims of assault and experiencing depression, anxiety and, tragically, suicide. The fact that the majority party would aim to subject trans and non-binary youth to further exclusion and harassment is sickening and it is also illegal. We should be striving for inclusion in Pennsylvania, not sending a message of hate to LGBTQ+ youth and their families.” “Republican leaders are holding a hearing on a pretend issue and on a bill that stands zero chance of Read more

Madden: Over $46,000 awarded to first responders in the 115th District

(Jun 30, 2021)

MONROE, June 30 – In keeping with her commitment to bring home much-needed grant funding to volunteer fire and rescue squads, state Rep Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, said $46,537 has been awarded to fire and rescue companies in the 115 th legislative district. Madden said it is important for the safety of the community to continue funding volunteer fire and rescue companies because during the pandemic, companies were unable to hold fundraising events. “Grants for fire and emergency service companies help pay for expense such as equipment, apparatus, training and salaries necessary to protect and serve the community,” Madden said. The following volunteer companies have received grants: $13,302 - Chemical Co. No 1 - Stroudsburg $12,589 - Phoenix Fire and Engine - Stroudsburg $11,876 - Acme Hose Co. - East Stroudsburg $8,771 - Pocono Mt. Regional EMS -Tobyhanna Act 91 of 2020 updated and expanded the program to include airport fire companies and reauthorize the program to 2024. The program gets $30 million annually -- $25 million from the State Gaming Fund and $5 million from the Property Tax Relief Fund. It also expanded the allowable use of funds to include recruitment and retention programs, length of service award programs, and for the grants awarded in 2021 and 2022 to replace the revenue lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Commentary - Have a miscarriage in a hospital? PA Republicans are ready to charge you for it.

(Jun 24, 2021)

Have a miscarriage in a hospital? PA Republicans are ready to charge you for it. Recently, members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives voted on a slew of anti-abortion bills that would harm women all over the state. One bill, H.B. 118, prime sponsored by Rep. Francis Ryan, R-Lebanon, would create an unnecessary, draconian requirement for hospitals and clinics to make funeral arrangements for fetal remains at any stage of pregnancy. Not only does this bill impose extra costs on health care facilities and women who do not wish to use the disposition arrangements made by these facilities, it compromises patient privacy by essentially creating a state database of miscarriages and abortions. The bill shames and penalizes women for miscarrying and exercising their right to choose. House Democratic female representatives provided rebuttal testimony on the bill capturing their stories of loss, trauma and difficult decisions. I was one of these women. I shared my experience birthing what would have been my only child with my husband Roy, who was stillborn. I could not imagine what it would have been like if hospital staff entered the birthing room afterwards, asking questions about fetal remains and disposition. The proposed legislation will traumatize women across the state who are already facing incredibly difficult circumstances. State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, D-Chester, stated that H.B. 118 is an “incredibly invasive and misguided mandate…It Read more

Madden and McNeill take helm of Northeast Delegation

(Jun 16, 2021)

HARRISBURG, June 16 – State Rep. Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, has been selected to serve as chairwoman of the Northeast Democratic Delegation of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the remainder of 2021-22 legislative term. Madden took over the chair position when delegation chairman Marty Flynn, D-Lackawanna, was sworn in as a state senator last week. State Rep. Jeanne McNeill, D-Lehigh was appointed to serve the remainder of Madden’s unexpired term as vice-chairwoman. Both Madden and McNeill were appointed by the delegation’s 14-member board. Madden, who has now gained seniority as chairwoman, said she is dedicated to move the delegation forward on many issues important to the Northeast. “The Northeast Delegation will be tackling important issues that matter to everyone, such as equity in education, social programs, senior services, diversity, equal pay, voting rights, health care and workplace safety regulations,” Madden said. “We must continue to work together on both sides of the aisle and mend our divisions so we can provide unified, effective change for the people of Pennsylvania.” McNeill said she will be at the forefront of debates on issues that affect her constituency and the delegation. “I t’s an honor that my colleagues have selected and entrusted me with the responsibilities of vice-chairwoman for the Northeastern Delegation,” McNeill said.
