New restaurant opening

Congratulations to SMP Steaks on the opening of their newest restaurant – right next door to my district office! If you’re from this area, you know how great their steak sandwiches are. Chad and Nancy, I wish you all the best!

Attending BASD’s annual Convocation

I was honored to be invited to Bethlehem’s Area School District’s annual Convocation. A truly remarkable uplifting event. I am so impressed with not only the new Superintendent, but also the staff who work together to not only plan this event, but also for all that they do for the students of BASD.

It was great to return to Freedom High School, especially as a former student myself.

Traffic update for next week

Residents and motorists should be aware that the planned conversion of Front Street and Second Street to two-way traffic is currently anticipated for next week (August 24-28).

The traffic pattern change is dependent upon power being installed to the new traffic signals, which is expected this week. Once that work is complete, a more specific conversion date will be announced.

Additional no parking notices will also be posted prior to the final line striping and traffic pattern change.

Residents of even-numbered properties 2-30 Front Street and 12-38 Second Street who do not have off-street parking are strongly encouraged to obtain a parking permit for the Race Street or Canal Street municipal lots before the traffic changes take effect.

To apply for a parking space, please visit the Borough Office Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. and bring your vehicle registration information.

Please look for posted signs and use caution when traveling through the area. Thank you for your patience as this project moves toward completion.

New executive order regulating data centers

Gov. Shapiro just signed an executive order establishing new requirements for data center development, including stronger protections for communities, increased transparency and environmental standards.

This is an important step toward ensuring that residents don’t have to pay the price that comes with data centers and big tech development.

New grant funding for infrastructure improvements

Our community recently received $1 million in grant funding for overall infrastructure improvements along Bethlehem’s Broad Street corridor. This will increase accessibility and make it safer for driving, riding, and walking through this area.

Passing of Jim Martin

I am saddened with the passing of former Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin. He was a dedicated public servant who fought with passion, skill, and empathy to protect the people of Lehigh County from crime.

He advocated for and founded the Regional Intelligence and Investigation Center (RIC) which allowed local police departments to share gathered crime data. This greatly increased the number of apprehensions and convictions of criminals across the Lehigh Valley.

Jim also established the Elder Abuse Taskforce, helped establish the County’s Drug Treatment Court, and created the Child Advocacy Center.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia. Rest in Peace, Jim, and thank you.
