March 6 Email: Celebrating Women’s History Month in March

PA Representative Jennifer O'Mara's banner image

Dear Neighbor,

Please join me in recognizing Women’s History Month in March, because women’s many significant contributions to our history often get too little notice. In fact, women have played important roles in advancing equality and justice, breaking down barriers, and shaping our cultural and political landscape. Women’s History Month reminds us all to celebrate our accomplishments, honor women’s struggles, and do our part to inspire future generations of women.

This year’s theme for Women’s History Month is Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations. The theme is designated annually by the National Women’s History Alliance.

For a list of things to see and do in Southeast PA related to women’s history—such as special programs at the National Constitution Center and Women in Art Tours at the Philadelphia Museum of Art—check out Visit Philadelphia here.

Testimony supports my bill to regulate AI use in counseling

Last week the PA House Democratic Policy Committee held a hearing on a bill to regulate the use of AI in counseling—legislation I’ve sponsored with state Rep. Ryan Bizzarro. House Bill 2100 would provide safeguards to protect client welfare and regulate counselors’ use of AI in providing services, ensuring that a human continues to be the primary provider of counseling services. At the hearing, we heard from experts about what they’re seeing, their concerns, and how we can protect Pennsylvanians.

Read more about the hearing here or watch it at this link.

Our successful Property Tax/Rent Rebate Event

Senator Kearney and I were happy to be able to help so many people yesterday at our Property Tax/Rent Rebate Event at Media Fellowship House. PA’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program makes it easier for older friends and neighbors to stay in their homes while affording groceries, medicine, and other necessities. The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians 65 or older, widows and widowers 50 or older, and people with disabilities 18 or older. Learn more about the program here.

The deadline for applying is June 30. If you were unable to make it yesterday my staff and I are available to assist with applications, so don’t hesitate to contact my district office.

Governor’s advisory on ICE activities at health care and social service facilities

I want everyone in Delco to have the important information they need regarding ICE activities in Pennsylvania. Recently, Gov. Shapiro issued an advisory about potential immigration activities at health care and social service facilities. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security last year lifted restrictions prohibiting ICE from carrying out immigration enforcement in protected areas like health care facilities and social service providers. According to the governor’s advisory, this means DHS may attempt to conduct activities in hospitals, doctors’ offices, urgent care centers, vaccination or testing sites, crisis centers, domestic violence shelters, and other health care and social services locations.

The governor’s advisory contains information about interacting with agents, warrants and subpeonas, and considerations for facility leadership. You can read the full advisory here.

Daylight Saving this weekend

At 2 a.m. Sunday, we jump ahead to 3 a.m., so remember to adjust any clocks in your home before going to bed on Saturday night.

It’s also a good reminder to change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. The Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner recommends doing so twice a year at each change of clocks between Daylight Saving Time and Standard Time.

Drop off children’s books at my office

My office is participating in a local children’s book drive to help put books in the hands of Delco children. We are a drop-off site for the Delco Book Bank’s Easter Basket & Summer Reading Book Drives. So feel welcome to drop off new or gently used children’s books at my office!

Beware of this text scam

State officials warn that scammers are sending texts claiming to be from the PA Department of Revenue asking people to update their banking information. Don’t fall for it—do not reply or click any link. Delete the text. The Department of Revenue wants residents to know it will never send unsolicited texts asking for personal data.

Applications open for home heating help

Applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program are open. Through the program, you can apply for a cash grant to help pay your heating bill—from $200 to $1,000 based on your household size, income, and fuel type.

For more information, click here. You can also contact my office if you need help applying for LIHEAP or need help with any utility-related issues.

Businesses and nonprofits: A reminder about filing your annual report

The PA Department of State is reminding business owners and non-profits about the annual report that must be filed each year with the Bureau of Corporations and Charitable Organizations. The reports contain information such as current addresses and officer names that must be kept current. The bureau has a streamlined online system which makes filing easy at www.dos.pa.gov/AnnualReports.
