HARRISBURG, Dec. 13 – State Reps. Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, and Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, have introduced legislation that would make the PA Preferred Organic Program a trademark in Pennsylvania. Since 2019, the PA Preferred Organic Program has been used to increase market opportunities for Pennsylvania farmers. Because of this program, Madden said, Pennsylvania ranks third nationally in organic agriculture sales. “I have an organic farm in my district, Pocono Organics , that provides not only a variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables to purchase but has a litany of programs for children of all ages, veterans and adults,” Madden said. “PA Preferred Organic businesses grow all foods under the sun that are healthy for us, and that alone should be a reason to make the program permanent in our commonwealth.” Pashinski, Democratic chair of the House Agriculture & Rural Affairs Committee , said Pennsylvania has 1,055 certified organic farms and more than 93,000 acres of certified organic land in the state. “Pennsylvanians are increasingly seeking a greater quality, quantity and variety of organic foods at their markets and grocery stores,” Pashinski said. “By making Pennsylvania-produced organic products even more readily available, our farmers can continue to benefit from this rapidly expanding market.” Pashinski noted the program would not compete with other state producers but instead Read more
HARRISBURG, Dec. 9 – State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-Luzerne, recently announced that three grants to support public safety in his district as well as Luzerne County will be receiving a total of $517,835 in grant funds from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. The statewide grant program is dedicated to breaking cycles of violence and substance abuse in communities across the commonwealth. The grant awards for Luzerne County include: $375,000 from the STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program was approved by the Office of Victims’ Services for the Luzerne County chief executive to continue a cross-system, collaborative response to reduce violence against women (VAW) crimes in the county. $95,835 in Opioid Misuse Prevention Funds was approved by the Office of Justice Programs for Luzerne County commissioners to hire a full-time certified Spanish interpreter for the County Drug Treatment Court participants. $47,000 in Children’s Advisory Center funds was approved by Children’s Advocacy Center Advisory Committee to help the Luzerne County Child Advocacy Center (LCCAC) maintain the full-time position of the current executive director. “The safety of ALL in our community, county and commonwealth remains a top priority and this grant funding brings us closer to realizing that goal,” Pashinski said. “Each of these grants will help protect some of the most vulnerable among us – including Read more
