Christina Sappey has introduced a resolution designating September 2021 as “International Underground Railroad Month” in recognition of the pivotal role that Pennsylvania played in the abolition movement during the 19th century via the Underground Railroad. “Pennsylvania, and Chester County in particular, played a crucial role in assisting enslaved people flee to freedom via the Underground Railroad,” said Sappey, D-Chester. “Our commonwealth was dotted and crossed with hundreds of safehouses, escape routes and hiding places. Who were the heroes of the Underground Railroad? Christina Sappey today congratulated Hilltop Crab House Restaurant and Bar in New Garden Township on receiving a $30,000 Covid-19 Hospitality Industry Recovery Program grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and the Chester County Economic Development Council. Sappey was on hand for an award presentation to Hilltop’s owner Sean Hanrahan and Hilltop General Manager Heather Brydges, along with DCED Deputy Secretary Steven D’Ettore and CCEDC Chief Operating Office Mike Grigalonis. “Our locally owned restaurants are vital to our economy here in the 158 th , and they continue to experience serious hardships from the pandemic. I am so happy to see these grant dollars go to Hilltop and their warm, welcoming staff,” said Sappey, D-Chester. “These funds were allocated through Senate Bill 109, which I was proud to support and vote for. In total, S.B. 109 provided nearly $1 billion in rental and housing assistance, education support and relief for our hospitality industry.” CHIRP is a $145 million statewide program created by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania to alleviate revenue losses and pay for eligible operating expenses for certain businesses in the hospitality industry, which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. KENNETT SQUARE, May 4 – State Rep. Christina Sappey announced that Downingtown Area School District was awarded a state grant that will help improve access to healthy, local food in school and increase agriculture awareness. Downingtown Area School District was awarded a $15,000 Farm to School Grant by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The grant will be used to help with the procurement of local foods for cafeterias in five elementary schools. “As a supporter of increasing agriculture education and awareness in our schools, I’m thrilled to see this grant awarded,” said Sappey, D-Chester. “It’s important that students learn the critical role that agriculture plays in our communities and our economy. Introducing young students to locally grown foods is an excellent way to start.” Sappey said the grant builds on previous state investments made through the Pennsylvania Farm Bill, including Ag and Youth grants to the Chester County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Future Farmers and the Chester County Intermediate Unit last year. Christina Sappey, D-Chester, and House Democratic Policy Committee Chairman Ryan Bizzarro, D-Erie, hosted a special hearing on Pennsylvania public gardens today at Longwood Gardens in East Marlborough Township. Policy Committee members received testimony focusing on the economic impact, green job development, environmental and educational contributions of public gardens in Pennsylvania. Approximately 20 legislators heard testimony from garden advocates from across the state, including Casey Sclar, executive director of the American Public Gardens Association; Paul B. Redman, president and CEO of Longwood Gardens; Maitreyi Roy, executive director of Bartram’s Garden; and Richard Piacentini, president and CEO of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
