E-Blast: Budget Hearings Begin, Upcoming Events, & more!

Hello Neighbors, Community Members and Friends,

This week was the first of many House Appropriations budget hearings!

On Wednesday, we heard from PennDOT. I asked Secretary of Transportation Mike Carroll about how we can heighten traffic enforcement in school zones. Too often we see horrifying news stories about careless drivers speeding through school zones or blowing past school buses. We have elementary schoolers who walk across multiple state roads every day to get to school. You can watch the conversation between me and Secretary Carroll through the player above.

Later in the day, we heard from the Pennsylvania State Police. I took the time to ask

about their alert systems, specifically focusing around Ebony Alerts for missing Black and brown girls and boys and why there might be pushback for systems like this. You can watch that conversation using the player above.

On Thursday, we held hearings with the State System of Higher Education and the presidents of Pennsylvania's state-related universities.

With PASSHE I discussed the benefits of dual enrollment. Numerous students in both the William Penn and Upper Darby School Districts achieve more success and become much more comfortable pursuing higher education when given the opportunity to dual enroll. You can watch those remarks through the link here

With our state-related universities I talked about how our universities need to make sure black students and faculty feel like they are wanted and deserve to be there. You can watch those remarks through the link here.

Earlier today I talked with the secretaries of the departments of Health and Drug & Alcohol Programs about various pieces of the PA MOMNIBUS legislation that would help mothers across the commonwealth with many issues, including maternity care deserts and care for pregnant women in prison. You can watch those remarks using the player above!

YWCA York Black Maternal Health Event

On Thursday, I was the keynote speaker at the YWCA in York for their Racial Justice Committee’s Black Maternal Health event. We were empowered to advocate and raise awareness for challenges faced by Black Women and Mothers. The event featured medical professionals and the viewing of the documentary, “TOXIC! A Black Women’s Story.” Special thanks to the fellow panelists Dr. Claudia Twum, Dr. Courtnee Jordan-Cox, Dr. Carlos Roberts, Dr. Seanna Thompson, and Ester Moreau for bringing their expertise and advice on this critical issue!

DCIU CTE Month Citation

Also on Thursday, Team Curry went to the Delaware County Intermediate Unit to present a Citation on behalf of the Delco Delegation in honor of Career and Technical Education Month! Thanks to our District Office Director Cintia for presenting the citation!
