Malagari announces $280K grant to improve traffic flow

(Jul 07, 2021)

LANSDALE, July 7 – State Rep. Steve Malagari, D-Montgomery, today announced that Lansdale Borough received $280,000 to upgrade seven traffic signal controllers. “This funding from PennDOT’s Green Light-Go Program will help Lansdale improve traffic flow throughout the borough, thereby relieving long wait times at several traffic lights,” Malagari said. Lansdale was one of 50 municipalities throughout the state selected to receive a grant. More information and a complete list of grant recipients can be found online. “I’ve heard from multiple Lansdale residents about heavy traffic and the need to reassess traffic signals, so I’m proud to help secure this funding,” Malagari said. Green Light-Go grants reimburse municipalities for updates to improve traffic signal efficiency and operation. The grants can be used for projects such as installation of LED technology, traffic signal retiming, developing special event plans, monitoring traffic signals, and upgrading signals to the latest technologies. More information is available by calling Malagari’s office at 267-768-3671. Read more

Malagari: Small victories do not compensate for missed opportunities in this budget

(Jun 28, 2021)

HARRISBURG, June 28 – State Rep. Steve Malagari, D-Montgomery, released the following statement regarding the passage of Pennsylvania’s budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1: “This year’s budget had a number of small victories, such as providing funding for emergency rental assistance for Pennsylvanians still struggling financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as fully funding our state police and Department of Environmental Protection. However, where there are just a handful of small victories, there are several missed opportunities. “Pennsylvania recently dropped to 47th in the nation for education funding, and we see stark inequities throughout our public education system. This budget does increase our education funding by $300 million, with $100 million going to our commonwealth’s most underfunded districts, but this is only a 4.8% gain. We can do better to fairly fund education in Pennsylvania and fix the disparities harming students in underfunded schools, but this is a small step in the right direction. “While I believe education funding could have been a higher priority, I am proud to share that I helped bring home $2.45 million for North Penn and Souderton Area school districts. By working together with other Montgomery County legislators, including those across the aisle, we were able to secure this funding to address the needs and concerns that Read more

Malagari introduces legislation dedicating local highway to the late Rep. Godshall

(Jun 22, 2021)

HARRISBURG, June 22 – State Rep. Steve Malagari, D-Montgomery, introduced H.B. 1639, which would dub a portion of a Montgomery County roadway as the Honorable Robert W. Godshall Memorial Highway. Malagari said that the roadway noted in his legislation is the section of Pennsylvania Route 113 from its intersection with Schoolhouse Road, in Franconia Township, and State Route 4027, also known as County Line Road in Souderton Borough. Godshall served as the elected representative in the PA House for the 53rd Legislative District for 36 years. As a legislator, Malagari said that Godshall was an advocate for countless issues, including health care and tourism. Godshall died from cancer in 2019. “Representative Godshall was remarkably committed to being an accessible state representative and used his position to better the lives of Pennsylvanians with terminal illnesses,” Malagari said. “His legislation that allowed patients living with terminal illnesses to try treatments not yet approved by the FDA eventually expanded into national law.” Malagari’s legislation cleared the House Transportation Committee today. Next, it will be sent to the full House for a vote. “Representative Godshall was devoted to our community as he served 18 consecutive terms in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives plus an additional 20 years in other local offices. I’m happy to memorialize his Read more

Malagari applauds $14,000 grant to bolster tourism in Lansdale

(Jun 04, 2021)

LANSDALE, June 4 – State Rep. Steve Malagari announced that Discover Lansdale received a $14,310 grant to go toward the development of the town’s welcome center. The 1902 Reading Freight House, a striking stone structure, will undergo renovations to serve as Lansdale’s welcome center. The freight area will be repurposed as a public/private venue to support operations. “The Reading Freight House is among the most iconic and visible structures in our community, so it’s the perfect place to welcome travelers or anyone just passing through our area,” Malagari said. “Lansdale has a rich history and its own unique personality, so I am hopeful that a welcome center will attract others to the area who will see that.” This grant comes from the Keystone Historic Preservation grant program. The program is used to fund preservation, rehabilitation and restoration activities of historic sites that are eligible for or listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Malagari: Support Pennsylvania crematoriums by cooling the °Fs down

(May 24, 2021)

HARRISBURG, May 24 – State Rep. Steve Malagari, D- Montgomery, is introducing legislation that would help Pennsylvania’s 200 crematoriums operate more efficiently. It’s recommended that crematoriums operate between 1400º F and 1800º F. Current regulations state any crematorium put into operation past April 1989 is required to operate with a temperature of 1800º F. But Malagari said that’s too high, and the temperatures need to be turned down. “Operating at the highest temperature causes unnecessary burden on equipment, leads to higher fuel consumption, and increases environmental gas emissions,” said Malagari. “By dialing down the temperature a few hundred degrees, we would help mitigate the high costs for the state’s crematoriums.” Malagari’s proposal would set the minimum operating temperature of a crematorium at 1400º F. All other regulations pertaining to the operation of animal and human crematory incinerators would be carried over into this statute. “Most of the state’s crematoriums are family owned,” said Malagari. “With the recent and continued rise in demand for cremation services, this legislation would allow these businesses to operate in a more efficient and cost-effective manner, providing much-needed support for this industry.” This legislation would be known as the Crematory Regulation Act. It’s expected to be introduced soon. Read more

Malagari announces $13 million awarded to North Penn, Souderton School Districts

(Apr 01, 2021)

LANSDALE, April 1 – State Rep. Steve Malagari, D-Montgomery, today announced that North Penn and Souderton school districts received a collective total of $13.1 million from Pennsylvania’s Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund. North Penn received $9.3 million and Souderton received $3.8 million. “I’ve heard from countless families throughout my district that they want their children back in the classroom five days a week for in-person learning,” Malagari said. “This funding will help North Penn and Souderton school districts achieve this goal while ensuring students are on track academically.” Schools must use at least 20% of this money to address learning loss and the social, emotional and academic needs of underrepresented students, including students from low-income families, students with disabilities, English learners, migrant students, students experiencing houselessness and children in foster care. Schools may use the rest of the funding for a wide range of activities, including food service, professional training, technology purchases, sanitization and cleaning supplies, summer and after-school programs, and mental health supports. “Students, teachers and faculty alike will face unique challenges as they pull away from virtual learning. This funding will ensure the transition goes as smoothly and seamlessly as possible,” Read more
