Malagari announces $13 million awarded to North Penn, Souderton School Districts

(Apr 01, 2021)

LANSDALE, April 1 – State Rep. Steve Malagari, D-Montgomery, today announced that North Penn and Souderton school districts received a collective total of $13.1 million from Pennsylvania’s Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund. North Penn received $9.3 million and Souderton received $3.8 million. “I’ve heard from countless families throughout my district that they want their children back in the classroom five days a week for in-person learning,” Malagari said. “This funding will help North Penn and Souderton school districts achieve this goal while ensuring students are on track academically.” Schools must use at least 20% of this money to address learning loss and the social, emotional and academic needs of underrepresented students, including students from low-income families, students with disabilities, English learners, migrant students, students experiencing houselessness and children in foster care. Schools may use the rest of the funding for a wide range of activities, including food service, professional training, technology purchases, sanitization and cleaning supplies, summer and after-school programs, and mental health supports. “Students, teachers and faculty alike will face unique challenges as they pull away from virtual learning. This funding will ensure the transition goes as smoothly and seamlessly as possible,” Read more

Brown, Malagari continue to advocate for hands-free driving law

(Feb 18, 2021)

HARRISBURG, Feb. 17 – Reps. Rosemary Brown, R-Monroe/Pike, and Steve Malagari, D-Montgomery, continue to advocate and work for needed change in Pennsylvania’s driving laws, specifically in regard to cellphone usage while operating a motor vehicle. “Every day, I witness many drivers using their cellphones irresponsibly while driving- willingly putting themselves and those around them in danger on our roadways,” said Brown. “Cellphones are now becoming the largest distraction in the car and too many innocent lives, both in Pennsylvania and nationwide, have been altered or tragically lost due to this distracted driving. I want to thank Rep. Malagari for his bipartisan support of this legislation and working with me to get this legislation to the governor’s desk this session. “ Enhanced driver responsibility legislation has been introduced by Brown and Malagari ( House Bill 37 ) which seeks to require the use of Bluetooth technology or a docking station (hands-free) when using a cellphone while driving. “Almost every one of Pennsylvania’s neighboring states enacted driver responsibility laws to not allow mobile device use while driving. It’s time that Pennsylvania catches up to make our roadways safer,” said Malagari. “Strengthening our penalties on distracted driving is not a partisan issue, and it would show that our Commonwealth will not tolerate such reckless behavior. Our legislation is a Read more

Malagari drafts legislation to benefit small business owners

(Jan 26, 2021)

LANSDALE, Jan. 26 – State Rep. Steve Malagari, D-Montgomery, authored legislation to provide additional financial support to small businesses impact by the COVID-19 pandemic. Malagari’s bill would create a grant program designed to help local business owners pay off the interest on a loan that was taken out to save their business last year. Malagari said that his proposed grant program would provide the flexibility and relief that small business owners need to maintain their livelihoods once the disaster emergency declaration ends. “The COVID-19 pandemic had devastating effects on small businesses throughout the commonwealth. While some were able to shift their business models to online formats, others relied on a variety of loans to survive this public health crisis,” Malagari said. “This grant program would provide business owners with the financial support they need to recover from the pandemic by paying off the interest on the loans that they used to get by. As we work on getting on the other side of this pandemic, we must stand by our local businesses and help them get back on their feet while still fueling Pennsylvania’s economy.” Malagari’s legislation is currently circulating and accepting co-sponsors. (Jan 12, 2021)

Steve Malagari and Liz Hanbidge, both D-Montgomery, today announced that the Pennsylvania Northeastern railroad received a $483,000 grant to replace approximately 6,000 ties on its Stony Creek and Bethlehem branches. “The Pennsylvania Northeastern railroad operates throughout Montgomery, Bucks and Philadelphia counties, so it’s a major contributor to our regional economy,” Hanbidge said. “This $483,000 to help upgrade the Stony Creek and Bethlehem branches will ensure that employees can do their jobs safely and communities throughout the area can continue receiving essentials that this freight line delivers.” “Many Montgomery County residents not only depend on the Pennsylvania Northeastern railroad for income, but also for the delivery of goods like food, lumber and paper products,” Malagari said. “Ensuring the functionality of local freight lines is essential for both our local economy and the prosperity of our community.” Pennsylvania Northeastern railroad was one of 26 rail freight improvement projects to receive funding. Malagari drafts legislation to help small businesses in entertainment, hospitality fields

(Jan 11, 2021)

HARRISBURG, Jan. 11 – State Rep. Steve Malagari, D-Montgomery, will introduce legislation that would help small businesses in the hospitality and entertainment industries recover from the economic impacts of COVID-19. Malagari’s bill would establish a grant program exclusively for these types of businesses. Eligible entities would include independent movie theaters, performing arts venues, restaurants, bars, taverns, catering companies and lodging accommodations. “The hospitality and entertainment industries were among the hardest hit throughout all the stages of COVID-19 mitigation measures. Many of these venues throughout the commonwealth remain completely closed down out of an abundance of caution,” Malagari said. “Once we can safely gather again, these are the places that many of us will look forward to visiting most. These local businesses need our support now more than even and I want to help make sure they can survive this crisis.” Malagari noted that previous recipients of more than $100,000 in COVID relief would be ineligible for this program so that the new funding could assist those most in need. Questions may be directed to Malagari’s office by calling 267-768-3671. Read more
