Rep. Joanna E. McClinton September 30, 2026
HARRISBURG, Sep. 30 -- House Democratic Leadership issued the following statement responding to published reports of Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Butler/Lawrence) using disturbing homophobic slurs and violent language at a downtown Harrisburg bar.
"These reports of a member spewing hateful, vile language about another member are shocking, offensive and deeply disappointing. He should be ashamed of himself and apologize for his embarrassing and hateful behavior.
"While we know our friend is strong, focused and determined in his work, no one deserves to be spoken about like that and we will always stand up to bullies.
"We hope Rep. Bernstine looks at his words and actions—as well as his previous numerous reprehensible behaviors—and expeditiously does the right thing for his constituents, his caucus and the chamber.
"We’re taking this seriously and exploring potential next steps, and we look forward to hearing what repercussions Republican House leadership will impose for his abhorrent behavior. We stand with the Equality Caucus and Black Caucus' call for him to resign, just like House Republican leaders called on him to resign in the past."
