This is a reminder that my office and Sen. Nick Miller’s office will co-host my annual Senior and Veterans Expo. Please save the date and join us on April 10 at the St. Luke’s Fieldhouse for one-stop shopping for local, state, and federal services to help you.

The deadline for filing your Pennsylvania personal income tax return is coming up on April 15. PA ABLE eligibility expands

The PA ABLE Savings Program, which gives individuals with qualifying disabilities a way to save or invest tax-free without impacting government benefits, has recently expanded its age limit.

Individuals whose disability began before age 46 (up from the previous limit of 26) can now open an account, without impacting benefits like Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income. Participants can use funds for a wide range of disability-related expenses and deduct contributions from Pennsylvania state income taxes.

To find out if you or a loved one is eligible, visit paable.gov.

Help picking a Medicare Advantage plan

Medicare Advantage’s open enrollment period runs through March 31, and eligible Pennsylvanians can take advantage of the Pennsylvania Medicare Education and Decision Insight program (formerly APPRISE).

MEDI is a free program run by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging that helps older Pennsylvanians choose a plan based on their income and medical needs.

Touring the Kindness Project

I had the opportunity to tour the Kindness Project located in Emmaus, PA. They offer free support to families fostering children in eastern Pennsylvania. Given that kids are often placed into foster care without any personal items, the group’s Kindness Exchange provides new clothes, shoes, hygiene items, and even beds to foster families.

Their mission statement is to provide a brighter future for youth in foster care by offering free essential resources and enrichment opportunities.

Visiting the Whitehall Active Community Center on St. Patrick’s Day

I had an amazing time with the good folks – Irish all of them – at Whitehall Active Community Center. Whitehall Active does so much to support our senior community. What a great group of people. If you’re a senior, stop by sometime and see if there’s a group or activity that’s for you!

They’re located at 2301 Pine Street in Whitehall.

Keeping PA service members in our hearts

Members of the Pennsylvania National Guard’s 131st Transportation Company, 228th Motor Transportation Battalion, 213th Regional Support Group will soon be deploying in key support roles as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. They’ll be delivering equipment and supplies throughout the U.S. Army Europe and Africa area of operation.

Please keep them, and their families, in your hearts as they perform their duties.

Bringing awareness to underage gambling

With the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship upon us – one of the most significant wagering events in the United States – the PA Gaming Control Board is encouraging younger Pennsylvanians to keep the madness of March on the court, not in their wallet.

The PGCB’s “What’s Really at Stake” campaign aims to raise awareness about young people who can be negatively affected by gambling. According to an NCAA study, 58% of 18- to 22-year-olds engage in sports betting, with 6% reporting losing over $500 in a single day. Greater availability of online gambling has resulted in an increase of youth gambling across the board, so we need to have open discussions about the risks and potential harms.

The What’s Really at Stake website includes a risk check quiz for youth, and resources for parents, siblings and friends. More information can be found on the campaign on the website, or at ResponsiblePlay.pa.gov. As always, if you are of legal gambling age, please do it responsibly.

Report axle-breakers in your community

Do you have one of these axle-breakers on a state road in your town or do you have to navigate past one on your commute? PennDOT is asking that you report them.

You can use the website to report any road issues – but especially potholes. You can even take a picture of the pothole and attach it to your report.
