STROUDSBURG, Sept. 12 – State Reps. Maureen Madden, D-Monroe, and Jeanne McNeill, D-Lehigh, held a news conference today to promote their pet safety legislation to stop pet stores from luring customers into leasing pets for an exorbitant amount of money. Madden said the proposed bill would protect both Pennsylvania consumers and animals. “Our bill seeks to end deceptive practices and cruelty to pets in Pennsylvania,” Madden said. "We are working with various animal rights advocates from across the state to move this legislation forward.” Madden said pet leasing is a relatively new practice in which pet stores and breeders offer a low-cost way to own a pet. "Pet leasing has already been banned in California and Nevada and legislation is currently awaiting consideration in New York, and I think those states lead by Read more

STROUDSBURG, Sept. 7 – State Reps. Maureen Madden, D-Monroe and Jeanne McNeill D- Lehigh, are holding a news conference on their pet safety legislation 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12 at the Animal Welfare Society of Monroe County (AWSOM), 3129 Godfrey Ridge Drive, Stroudsburg. Special guest speaker will be Kristen Tullo, Humane Society of the United States state director. Sandy Fellin, president of AWSOM, will also attend. The representatives want to stop pet stores from luring customers to buy a cute but expensive pet. They say customers sign what they believe is a loan that will allow them to make monthly payments, only to discover it’s not really a loan, but a lease. Other states such as California and Nevada have enacted legislation to ban the practice and similar legislation is currently awaiting consideration in the New York legislature. For more information contact Madden’s office at (570) 420-2850 . The media is invited to attend. Read more
