Does the State OWE YOU MONEY?

(Jan 24, 2023)

One of my favorite responsibilities in representing my neighbors in the 191 Legislative District is connecting you to state programs that will put money back in your pocket. This includes, but is not limited to, the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program and the more than $4 billion in unclaimed property being safeguarded by the Pennsylvania Treasury. The state Treasury estimates about one in 10 Pennsylvanians is owed a portion of the unclaimed property currently in their possession, with the average value of a claim ringing in at $1,500. But how do you know if YOU have unclaimed property? It’s quite simple. All you do is visit https://patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property/ to access the Treasury’s online search portal. From there you’ll be asked to provide some general information – like your first and last name and street address – before you can begin your search. If you cannot access it easily, feel free to call my legislative district office directly at 215-748-6712 for assistance. Every one of us must take a few minutes to check the online portal for unclaimed property. It will be worth your time. Who knows – a claim could be waiting for you! Another state-related program that will benefit some of you reading this is the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program. The application window for 2022 rebates opened Jan. 19 and runs through June 30. This program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians 65 and older, widows and widowers Read more

McClinton: More than $1 million in violence prevention funding awarded to West Philly organization

(Jan 18, 2023)

HARRISBURG, Jan. 18 – S tate Rep. Joanna McClinton, D-Phila./Delaware, today announced more than $1 million in violence prevention funding is being awarded to ACHIEVEability in West Philadelphia. McClinton said the funding – $1,010,014 – will go toward the organization’s 60 th Street Strong Coalition. “I’m extremely encouraged to see such a large amount of funding awarded to ACHIEVEability and its 60 th Street Strong Coalition,” McClinton said. “This coalition – and organization as a whole – literally saves lives. It takes our youngest neighbors, especially those most affected by gun violence and related trauma, off the streets and offers them an opportunity to receive paid employment training, skills and mentorship.” State Rep. Morgan Cephas, D-Phila., offered similar remarks. ACHIEVEability and the 60 th Street Strong Coalition serve her legislative district, too. “This grant puts the city on a very good path,” Cephas said. “Increasing the number of youths served in West Philadelphia will help lower the risks associated with the gun violence that plagues our city. Paid employment training is absolutely necessary to win this fight against gun violence.” The legislators said the funding will help to expand the coalition’s anti-gun violence initiative by doubling the number of youth served by the program and Read more

Our community’s treasures

(Dec 29, 2022)

It is an exciting time in the west and southwest Philadelphia and, quite honestly, citywide. This year has been prosperous for our neighbors, and I’m delighted to say we’ve made a hard push to provide funding for our free, public spaces. As a state representative and lifelong resident of Southwest Philadelphia, I can attest to the importance of public spaces, their role in our community, and why it’s necessary we leave no stone unturned when it comes providing funding for their upkeep and revitalization. Public spaces are locations where our community bond is nurtured, memories are made, and our children learn and grow. Now, more than ever, is the time to provide direction for our young people and instill hope for their future. This is possible by dedicating resources to our public spaces and revitalizing outdated building and playgrounds. I’m happy to say we’ve already had a running start in this regard, and projects are already underway at locations in Cobbs Creek and Southwest Philly. To date, we’ve secured $4.5 million in funding for the Francis J. Myers Recreation Center located on Kingsessing Avenue. This funding is being used to make critical improvements like making the facility environmentally safe, improving its roof, exterior masonry, installing new windows and doors, updating the plumbing, mechanical systems, fire alarm and fire protection systems, Read more
