Dear Neighbors,
Governor Shapiro talked a lot about affordability in his Budget Address earlier this month. Affordability can relate to the price of many things, from the rent or mortgage you pay to the cost of weekly groceries or medical care.
One way we’re planning to approach affordability in Pennsylvania is by addressing the rising costs of the energy we use to heat our homes and keep the lights on. After a severely cold winter like this one, I know many of you are feeling the impact of these costs right now.
The House Energy Committee and House Consumer Protection, Technology, and Utilities Committee have a line-up of bills ready for consideration that would tackle energy costs head-on. Check them out in the graphic below.
As a member of the House Consumer Protection, Technology, and Utilities Committee, I’m proud to share these bills with you and to answer any questions you may have about them or the process of getting them to the Governor’s desk. Feel free to connect with my office for this or for support with other state services at (215) 323-6997.
If you need more immediate assistance with heating bills, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program is open for applications through April 10. This program offers cash grants for qualifying residents to help pay the costs of utility bills. Learn more and apply for the grants here.

Protecting Seniors from Scams
|
This past Wednesday, I hosted a policy hearing with the PA House Democratic Policy Committee in Harrisburg to discuss how scammers are targeting seniors, and what can be done about it. Our panel heard from experts as well as victims.
This is a deeply personal issue to me as we discovered a few years ago that my own mother had been defrauded out of close to $40,000 over the span of two years. The amount of pain and financial damage these scammers are causing older adults and their families is unconscionable, and something must be done.

New Fast File tax initiative
|
The PA Department of Revenue launched a free pilot program offering certain Pennsylvanians a simplified way to file their PA Personal Income Tax return. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive a letter in the mail encouraging you to use Fast File through myPATH, the online tax-filing system. The department identified nearly 100,000 residents eligible for Fast File, so keep your eye on your mail!
