Young hosts School Lunch and Interview event in partnership with McDonald’s

(Dec 08, 2021)

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 8 – State Rep. Regina Young, D-Phila./Delaware, held a School Lunch and Interview event with youth from John Bartram High School in partnership with McDonald’s. “Seven students were hired on the spot and several more received calls the next day for job offers,” said Young. “For most of these kids, this is their first job opportunity and first time receiving a job interview. For some, it can even be an opportunity to help provide at home. It was great to see the principal and leadership team of the neighborhood school district out in support. Many of these students are at-risk youth, impacted by gun violence daily, and I am thrilled to see them getting an opportunity to grow and develop.” Young partnered with local team members from McDonald’s, community partners, school districts, and government officials from all levels of government. The goal of the event was for students to learn more about what employers are looking for in customer service jobs and the career paths that can come from these opportunities. HARRISBURG, Nov. 19 – State Rep. Regina Young, D-Phila./Delaware, today announced that the Philadelphia International Airport and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation will receive a total of $1.05 million in Commonwealth Financing Authority Multimodal Transportation and Act 13 funds. “I’m thrilled to see this needed boost coming to the City of Philadelphia,” Young said. “Infrastructure and investments in open green spaces attract more people to the area and provide those living in the community with a better place to raise a family. I will continue working to bring state dollars and investments to the area to improve infrastructure at every level.” The City of Philadelphia, Department of Commerce, Division of Aviation was awarded $1 million for Phase 2 of its improvement project that will revitalize a critical asset crucial to the baggage operation system of the Philadelphia International Airport. Young seeks to ease burden on local election officials, fights against voter suppression through new legislation

(Nov 08, 2021)

HARRISBURG, Nov. 8 – State Rep. Regina Young, D-Phila./Delaware, plans to introduce legislation that would combat voter suppression and make Pennsylvania elections more efficient for local election workers. Part of Young’s legislation would deal with mail-in ballots, allowing them to be counted up to 21 days before an election and requiring that the counting process start within seven days of an election. The existing election guidelines forbid any vote counting earlier than Election Day. “Mail-in voting has become incredibly popular and our election policy needs to reflect that,” Young said. “This legislation would lessen the massive burden county election workers currently face on Election Day and yield accurate election results faster.” The new legislation from Young would also give voters a chance to prove their identity if their ballot is denied because of a mismatched signature. “I refuse to allow votes to be silenced because of signature variances,” Young said. “Our election officials do a fantastic job – but they are not trained handwriting experts. If two signatures don’t match up, the voter must be notified and allowed to affirm their signature.” Under current election policy, mail-in ballots that show a signature inconsistency are immediately rejected without any notice or appeal offered to the elector. “As an elected official, it is my duty to continue the fight to eliminate Read more

LIHEAP: Expanded Home-Heating Assistance is Available to PA Renters, Homeowners

(Nov 04, 2021)

As winter approaches and we prepare to spend even more time indoors, utility bills are only going to get more expensive. Additionally, we know that the COVID-19 pandemic and economic downturn have made it difficult for many to keep up with home energy bills. No Pennsylvanian should ever have to worry that their heat will be shut off during the coldest and darkest months of the year. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded program administered by the Department of Human Services (DHS) that provides assistance for home heating bills so Pennsylvanians can stay warm and safe during the winter months. Assistance is available for both renters and homeowners. LIHEAP helps some of the commonwealth’s most vulnerable citizens — children, older Pennsylvanians, people with disabilities, and low-income families — make ends meet. Anyone who may need help, or anyone who has loved ones or neighbors who could benefit from this program, is encouraged to apply for LIHEAP today. APPLY FOR LIHEAP LIHEAP FACTS How do I apply for LIHEAP? Depending on preference, different options are available to apply for LIHEAP: Apply online: Pennsylvanians can apply at www.compass.state.pa.us . Young condemns H.B. 1300 as ‘Voting Rights Suppression Act’

(Jun 16, 2021)

HARRISBURG, June 16 – State Rep. Regina G. Young, D-Phila., in a statement today, condemned H.B. 1300, a 150-page bill that would alter voting deadlines, limit early voting, make mail-in ballot procedures more difficult and mandate IDs for all in-person voters, saying that it as assault on voting rights. “House Bill 1300 is 150 pages of drivel and lies outfitted as policy. Its author and supporters have dubbed it with a virtuous name, the Voting Rights Protection Act, but whose voting rights is it really protecting?” Young said, a day after voting no on the bill’s passage in the House State Government Committee. “House Bill 1300 is really the Voting Rights Suppression Act. It only stands to create obstacles in exercising the right to vote. Measures such as stricter voter ID mandates, signature verification requirements for mail ballots, and limiting the availability of drop boxes, are all attempts to deter people from voting and suppress votes. “Another issue with this bill is that it offers no solutions to streamlining the elections process. For months, Republican and Democratic election officials from across the state urged the legislature to revamp our elections code to allow the elections process to run smoother. One unanimous plea was to enact the pre-canvassing of mail-in ballots, a measure the majority party in the committee said they would review. However, the best they could come up with is H.B. 1300—a slap in Read more
