State Rep. Joanna McClinton is applauding the more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians who joined her and other state lawmakers for a telephone town hall to address public concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. "As legislators, we have a responsibility to the families we serve to connect them with the resources and information they need to help overcome this health crisis," said McClinton, D-Phila/Delaware. "The sheer number of participants illustrates the importance of these conversations. It gave us the opportunity to hear first-hand the struggles people are facing, which ultimately assists in our fight to find solutions to move the commonwealth forward." From small business owners and Social Security recipients to individuals who rely on assistance programs, McClinton helped answer questions about COVID-19 last Wednesday while stressing the need to protect the commonwealth and reopen the economy safely. "I'm proud to support the House Democrats' PA HEALS plan that's dedicated to putting people first, taking care of employees on the front lines and supporting community-based businesses," McClinton explained. "Reopening the economy too fast would hurt our efforts to stop the spread of the virus, overwhelm our healthcare system and lead to a longer shutdown." The PA HEALS plan includes legislation that would: Use $100 million from the state’s Rainy Day Fund to provide 0% loans to smaller, local businesses Read more

PHILADELPHIA, April 22 – State Rep. Joanna McClinton responded Wednesday to legislation being pushed through the legislature by the Republican majority that would ignore warnings from medical experts and create unnecessary health risks for Pennsylvanians amid the COVID-19 crisis. "I share in everyone's eagerness to see our neighbors return to work, students go back to school and local businesses yet again have the best opportunities to flourish," said McClinton, D-Phila./Delaware. "However, each day, when the number of COVID-19 deaths are released, we are reminded of the serious pandemic facing the commonwealth." She voted against three bills Tuesday (H.B. 2400, H.B. 2376, H.B. 2388) that would bypass current mitigation efforts in place and disregard warnings from health professionals by having certain employees return to work prematurely, putting themselves and those they love at risk. "We can't open businesses back up by sacrificing the health and safety of our workers," McClinton explained. "Right now, the focus must be on protecting health care employees, first responders and the rest of our essential workforce who are putting their lives on the line each day to help others." McClinton stressed the need to pass legislation to ensure all essential workers have: Access to hazard pay . Emergency paid sick leave . The Read more

PHILADELPHIA, April 15 – State Rep. Joanna McClinton proudly joined a collaborative effort to deliver 100 donated Chromebook laptops Tuesday to help students in Philadelphia continue learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. "This health crisis has exposed a digital divide that is preventing students who don't have access to the required technology from completing their education," said McClinton, D-Phila/Delaware. "This would not have been possible without the community advocates who share my passion for providing our young people with the opportunities they need to succeed past COVID-19." McClinton teamed up with the nonprofit NERDiT Now and West Philadelphia Corridor Collaborative to bring these resources to individuals enrolled in the District 1199 Training Fund Program, where many are studying to join the medical field, get their early learning teaching certificate or obtain their GED. "Before, our students didn't have access to the online programs needed to participate in class or finish assignments," said Dawn Johnson, program manager of District 1199 Training Fund Program. "This is truly a blessing that will give them the ability to continue their education through distance learning." "It's an inspiration to see so many of the recipients striving to be part of the health care workforce and on the frontlines to combat the coronavirus," Read more

State Rep. Joanna McClinton today announced a $10,000 state grant to help the Coalition of African Communities promote awareness and participation in the 2020 Census. "As I help to protect my communities from COVID-19, I am also stressing the need for my neighbors to take part in the 2020 Census," said McClinton, D-Delaware/Phila. "The Census is a key opportunity to bring federal resources back to our neighborhoods to strengthen schools, fix roads and make health care affordable for all. However, these funds rely on participation, and with the public health crisis our country finds itself in, this grant is needed now more than ever to help convey the safe ways to be counted." The funding is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development's Census 2020 Outreach Grant program, which focuses on supporting efforts that target hard-to-count populations, including: Those who do not speak English as their primary language. Ethnic minorities. Immigrants. Members of the LGBTQ community. Individuals experiencing homelessness. "The Coalition of African Communities can use this funding to remind people that they can still adhere to COVID-19 safety precautions, such as social distancing, by filling out their census forms in the safest ways Read more
