McNeill announces two awards totaling $107K in state funding for community improvement projects

HARRISBURG, May 21 – State Rep. Jeanne McNeill, today announced that two projects in her community are recipients of state funding totaling $107,181 through the Local Share Account grants program.

“As a state legislator, I appreciate the opportunity to help the communities I represent by finding funding for worthy projects,” said McNeill. “Securing these funds will help improve the quality of life enjoyed by the people in these communities. The West Broad Street renovations will improve the area for bicyclists and pedestrians. The lighting improvements at our parks in Whitehall Township will allow for greater usability and safety.”

The grants awarded include:

  • $80,000 to Whitehall Township for lighting improvements at parks throughout the township – The project focuses on upgrading lighting systems across several parks within the Township Recreation System to improve safety, efficiency, and usability. West Catasauqua Playground, Stiles Playground, Cementon Park, and Hokendauqua Park will all receive new LED lighting, with existing poles, wiring, and conduit reused wherever feasible. At each site, outdated lighting infrastructure will be removed, new conduit and wiring added as needed, and new brackets, adapters, or pole-mounted fixtures will be installed. Across the various courts – including tennis, basketball, and volleyball – dozens of new LED fixtures will be positioned to provide consistent, modern illumination. Altogether, these improvements will modernize the parks’ recreation facilities while reducing long-term maintenance and energy consumption.

  • $27,181 to Bethlehem City for renovations to West Broad Street – The proposed project includes redesigning intersections with curb extensions and realigned crosswalks, upgrading pedestrian lighting and bus stops, adding bicycle lanes, and modernizing traffic signals to improve safety and efficiency. The project will improve pedestrian and bicyclists' safety.

The grants were approved on Wednesday by the Commonwealth Financing Authority. The Local Share Account Programs were created through the 2004 PA Racehorse Development and Gaming Act, which provides for the distribution of gaming revenue to support projects in the public interest within the commonwealth.
