Hearing explores growing need to support grandparents

(Sep 28, 2022)

“The stark reality is – and it happens for many reasons – grandparents raising grandchildren is a very real thing, and I know this has been going on for a very long time,” state Rep. Gina Curry, D-Delaware, said. “I’m thinking about the stigma in talking about the need to take care of family and grandchildren, and I’m concerned about people in my district who are in an isolated place because they may encounter language or cultural obstacles.” Read more

Gov. Wolf, Lt. Gov. Fetterman: Time is Running Out for People Interested in Quick Pardons through PA Marijuana Pardon Project

(Sep 28, 2022)

Harrisburg, PA – Pennsylvanians have a unique opportunity to be quickly pardoned from minor marijuana-related convictions through Governor Tom Wolf and Lt. Governor John Fetterman’s PA Marijuana Pardon Project and time is running out for those interested in applying. More than 2,500 people have already applied for their marijuana convictions to be pardoned through the project and the deadline to apply through the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons is this Friday, September 30, 2022. “Pennsylvanians convicted of simple marijuana charges are automatically disqualified for so many life opportunities: jobs, education, housing, special moments with family. This is wrong,” said Gov. Wolf. “In Pennsylvania, we believe in second chances – I’m urging those eligible to apply now, don’t miss your chance to forge a new path.” “Good people are being held back from living their best lives because of some old nonviolent weed charge,” said Lt. Gov. Fetterman. “Now is the time to apply, because we have no idea how long the legislature will continue refusing common sense legalization.” It is estimated that thousands of individuals are eligible due to convictions over the past several decades, even pre-dating marijuana’s inclusion as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act. Anyone with only the two select marijuana offenses noted below on their record is eligible to Read more

Curry responds to decision to close Delaware County Memorial Hospital

(Sep 23, 2022)

UPPER DARBY, Sept. 23 – State Rep. Gina H. Curry, D-Delaware, released the following statement today in response to Crozer Health announcing it will close Delaware County Memorial Hospital in 60 days and reopen it as a behavioral health facility: “I am extremely disappointed in the decision to close Delaware County Memorial Hospital,” Curry said. “This decision by Crozer will only exacerbate the inequities of those who live in the 164 th Legislative District and all of Delaware County. “This is really unacceptable. Where do we now go for emergency services? They’re not thinking about what’s best for this community and for the people who live in Upper Darby and the surrounding communities. “I feel that the community was ignored in the decision-making process. It’s very disappointing. This decision will overload the hospitals in the Main Line Health and University of Pennsylvania systems. It means people will have to travel 45-60 minutes to get to a hospital where they can receive care. That’s an unsafe and terrifying prospect. It is also not a viable option for residents who do not have easy access to transportation and now will have to take several buses to get to the closest emergency room. They left us in a desert. They left us in a bad place, and this didn’t have to happen .” In May, Curry hosted a Read more

Curry to host second Equity in Education virtual panel

(Sep 15, 2022)

UPPER DARBY, Sept. 15 – State Rep. Gina H. Curry, D-Delaware, will host a second virtual panel on equity in education at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29. This community discussion will focus on the impact that mental health has on students and families. School administrators, health officials, parents and community members are invited to attend this virtual discussion. “According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in six U.S. youth aged 6-17 have a mental health condition, but only half receive mental health services,” said Curry. “This past July, our state legislature passed a historic budget that included a $100 million increase for mental health support. This is a good start, but there is more work to do to ensure mental health resources are available for all students, regardless of background or Zip code. “The Equity in Education: Mental Health Awareness virtual panel is designed to identify and bring awareness of the mental health needs and inequities that are impacting our youth. The 164 th Legislative District would like to invite the community to join us for this important open discussion on the day-to-day mental health support needed in our schools.” Curry said the discussion will be live streamed on her Facebook page, www.facebook.com/RepGinaCurry .
